These unique carvings
are created on stones collected from the beaches of the
Pacific coast near Victoria, British Columbia. These
extremely hard rocks have tumbled in the huge surf for
thousands of years, giving each a unique natural shape.
Basalt stones are preferred for their dark color and
smooth texture. Unlike soapstone, the hardness of these
stones allow for handling with no danger of damage to the
carving. My original designs,
mostly of west coast animals, birds and fishes, are hand
cut into a mask which I apply to the stone. A miniature
sandblaster slowly carves away the exposed stone,
revealing the design. Some designs are carved into the
stone, while others are created by carving the stone away
to leave the design raised in relief. After cleaning, the
stones are treated with a special clear sealant to
display the natural color, and protect the stone from
water, dirt or stains.
I collect driftwood
bases for my larger carvings, matching the color,
texture, and form of the driftwood to the design on the
stone. Each base is prepared by hand-carving it to match
the shape of the stone then finishing it with a clear
plastic sealant. Felt pads are included to protect the
surface under the mount.
For mid-size carvings,
I produce hand crafted brass stands that accent the
design while maintaining the simplicity of the carving.
Small stones and paperweights are left free to find a
home in a pocket or on a desk.
The
garden plaques are carved on a variety of slate. Each has
a unique color texture and shape, making each one
original. They can sit up in a garden or planter with a
small wooden stake or lean against a wall or stone.
A variety of phrases are available, plus I
offer custom work for those who wish a specific image or
wording for a special gift. These make ideal gifts for
those who love gardening. Also available are custom
street numbers or wedding themes.
